Issues in the Development of Sociological Theory is the major annual sociological conference in Ukraine, held jointly by the Faculty of Sociology (Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv), Institute of Sociology (National Academy of Sciences), and Sociological Association of Ukraine.

In 2020 the conference will take place for the 17th time under the heading Conceptual Strategies for the Study of Social Consequences of COVID-19 Pandemic to primarily address the issues of challenges to social theory and methodology resulting from the worldwide pandemic condition.

Conference Conception

The new forthcoming decade of the 21st century is inaugurated not by local wars, informational overload, ecological disasters, or migration explosions, which all are characteristic of the modern world, but by a pandemic. This is not, of course, the first pandemic for humanity, but rather a forgotten reality, which was sidelined from the spotlight of social life for a while by successes of medical technologies. Indeed, epidemics and pandemics were reflected upon and analyzed by a significant number of social science thinkers and researchers. They include such well-known writings as “Man and Society in Calamity” by Pitirim Sorokin, “Plagues and Peoples” by William McNeill, “Material Civilization, Economics, and Capitalism” by Fernand Braudel, “Guns, Germs and Steel” by Jared Diamond, etc. Yet, the phenomenon of COVID-19 pandemic has some unique features due to its appearance at a specific historical juncture in human development, which creates both opportunities and challenges for traditional sociological theory and methodology.

Today, a significant number of researchers are actively involved in attempts to understand and study the phenomena ensuing from the pandemic. Expectedly, the first wave of research attention results in pluralism of opinions, starting, as an example, with the definition of the term “pandemic/epidemic” in Richard Gorton’s commentary “Offline: COVID-19 is not a pandemic” in The Lancet. At the same time, it has led to proliferation of innovative research strategies. For instance, the significant attention is devoted to modeling dynamics of the pandemic with consideration of social factors.

On the other hand, the COVID-19 pandemic has become a challenge to classical methodologies and methods used by sociologists so far. Pandemic conditions present a whole list of new important and urgent issues to sociological community, ranging from ethical aspects of research to specific fieldwork procedures.

Therefore, we invite sociologists and representatives of related fields to join the discussion on relationship between COVID-19 pandemic and research strategies and issues in sociology at our conference.

The Conference will be held online on December 18-19.

Themes of the Conference:

  1. Theoretical pluralism and innovative strategies of research in sociology

  2. The COVID-19 pandemic: challenges for methodology and research methods
