XX Anniversary International Scientific and Practical Conference
Issues in the Development of Sociological Theory
Social Dynamics, Social Interaction, and Sociological Research in the Context of War
"Issues in the Development of Sociological Theory" is an annual international scientific and practical conference held by the Faculty of Sociology of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv in partnership with the Institute of Sociology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Sociological Association of Ukraine to discuss the main trends in the development of Ukrainian society and Ukrainian sociology.
This year's conference title:
Social Dynamics, Social Interaction, and Sociological Research in the Context of War
Conference perspective
The global social dynamics and social interactions at the end of 2023 are largely determined by the factor of the war unleashed by the neighboring aggressor state against Ukraine. The war has already changed not only the European security order and become a factor in global geopolitical splits between democracy and various forms of authoritarianism, but also caused heated political debates and scientific and conceptual discussions, including sociological ones, about new global existential, security, socio-structural, informational, cultural and educational conditions and challenges, new risks, limitations, but also opportunities.
Contemporary sociological discourse outlines theoretical and conceptual imperatives for rethinking the new social reality and social experience. The "war" contexts of global and local social dynamics, splits and inequalities, social interactions: from real-life practical to communication and networking, from examples of civic practices of mutual support and various manifestations of solidarity to social splits and conflicts, existing and latent, have already become the subject of active sociological conceptualizations and research, and not only in Ukraine. After all, the war is a new tragic social and individual experience, a severe social trauma, a new actual reality, and at the same time certain chances and opportunities for Ukrainian society in the prospect of its post-war recovery.
The social problems of war, its security, economic, social, structural, and humanitarian consequences for Ukraine, Europe, and the world have been and will continue to be a priority for many social, including sociological, studies. For national sociology, the contexts of war will be present in sociological conceptualizations and studies, either articulated or invisible, even when they do not seem to address this topic.
Our conference is also an attempt, albeit a primary one, but already necessary, to comprehend our experience of being in war and its professional sociological understanding in different modes - from our own human experience to its social scale in the triad of classical sociological disposition and the interrelation of social dynamics, social interaction and the experience of sociological research in war.
